Against a golden sunset sky, two silhouetted figures push matching puzzle pieces toward the center. Each puzzle piece displays the word “WIN,” and the pieces are positioned to connect, representing teamwork, mutual success, collaboration, and shared goals.

Win-Win With a Gift of Stock

Own stock that’s increased in value (and that you’ve owned for at least one year)? You have a unique opportunity. If you donate your shares, you’ll receive the same tax savings that you would if you wrote University of Florida on a check…but with the added benefit of eliminating capital gains taxes!

Supporting the programs and areas that mean the most to you through a gift of securities is as easy as instructing your broker to transfer the shares. If your investments have benefited from the robust market, any appreciated stock in your portfolio could be used to make a charitable gift to UF.

How a Gift of Stock Works

$25,000 today’s stock value

$10,000 stock purchase price

Selling the stock:

$2,250: Capital gains tax owed ($15,000 x 0.15 capital gains tax rate for those in a tax bracket of less than 37%)

Donating the stock to UF:

$25,000: Income tax charitable deduction

$0: Capital gains tax

If you aren’t ready to give up your stock during your lifetime, you can designate it as a gift in your will or living trust. You’ll have the flexibility to change your mind at any time, plus you can continue to receive dividends and participate in shareholder votes.

We are happy to work with your advisors to help you plan for tomorrow and receive maximum benefits today.
